Use this SEO tips and techniques to increase your blogs Traffic

When it comes to SEO (Search engine optimization), most people focus their efforts on keywords and backlinks. Although important, keywords and backlinks are only a small part of overall SEO process. Google now uses more than 200 factors in their search algorithm including things like social signals, user-interaction and trust, so it’s important to focus on a wide variety of SEO factors.

In this article, i will mention some of the most overlooked aspects of SEO which will help you rank higher on search engines and get more organic traffic.

Having said that, sit back, relax and enjoy the list 🙂

 1. Get an SSL certificate to boost your rank.

In 2015 google announced that going HTTPS- adding a SSL certificate to your blog can help you rank higher on their results.

Now for those who don’t know what an SSL certificate is, an SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts sensitive information sent across the internet. This is very important if you are selling products on your website using credit card ,usernames and passwords and other sensitive information, if not encrypted with SSL, this information can be easily accessed by hackers and identity thieves.

To make sure your website is SSL certified, check the URL of your website, SSL certified websites will start with HTTPS and have a lock symbol with secure written next to it.

If you don’t have an SSL certificate for your website, you can get one from cloudfare for free.

If your website is hosted on bluehost, they offer free SSL certificate for WordPress websites. click here to find out how to activate your free SSL certificate.

2.  Invest Some Time in Finding the Right Keywords

The key principle to any SEO strategy is to find out what keywords people are searching for. The two main factors for determining a good keyword are : demand and competition.

Wouldn’t it be nice to rank on the first page of google for a keyword like “money”? In reality single keywords like this only account for 30% of the total traffic on the internet. When people search on search engines, they usually search for long-tail keywords like “How to make money” or “How to make passive income online”.

If you can find a good long-tail keyword with good demand and less competition, you can expect to get a good targeted traffic to your website for long term. Trying to rank higher for competitive keywords is usually futile because you will be competing against well-established websites and brands.

There are many tools you can use for keyword research, i have mentioned some of the popular ones below.

3) Optimize your Page loading speed

Page load times  are important and one of the factors in googles search algorithm. Remove anything that is slowing down your blog. Speeding up your blog will not only make you rank higher on google search but also keep readers from abandoning your blog.

Consider this:

  • 40% of people abandon a blog that takes more than 3 seconds to load.
  •  A 1 second delay in page response can result in a 7% reduction in conversions

You can use google’s webmaster tools->Page speed insights to find out your websites loading time.

Some tips for making your site faster

  • Compress images before uploading them, or use plugins like wordpress smush to compress them after uploading.
  • Delete unwanted Plugins.
  • Minify Javascript and CSS by using plugins like fast velocity.
  • Upgrade your hosting plan to dedicated server hosting or VPS(virtual private server).
  • Use or upgrade to a lightweight theme.
  • Use an effective caching plugin like W3 Total Cache.

4) Use the Right Keywords for your image

Most people forget to add proper keywords/tags to their images. There is a reason why google has an entire section dedicated to images. Incorrect tagging of your images can seriously make or break your blog.

If users are looking for a blue car and they find a blue bus in the search, they probably won’t click on it. Believe it or not, images can drive huge traffic to your website.

For this reason, you should name your images descriptively and include related text(like caption).

5) Publish long content

I am not saying publishing a 10,000 word long article would propel you to the first page of goggle but studies have show a correlation between longer content and higher rankings. serpiq conducted a study involving more than 20,000 keywords. The results showed that the average content length of each of the top 10 results was more than 2,000 words.

Unless you are writing on something very specific, keep your posts longer than 300+ words, Ideally 1000+ words. Publishing long informative content will not only help you rank higher on search engines but also get you more backlinks and social media shares.

Neil Patel of Quick Sprout conducted an experiment with some of his posts and found that, out of 327 blog posts he wrote under 1,500 words received an average of 174 tweets and 59 Facebook likes. The content that was over 1,500 words, on the other hand, received an average of 293 tweets and 75 likes.

6) Make sure your blog is mobile-friendly.

As of today, about 50% of my traffic comes from mobile devices,in fact, more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the US and Japan.

If your blog is not mobile optimized, google probably won’t favor you for searches being made on mobile.

Make sure,

  • You have a responsive mobile theme with fluid layout and media queries that works well on all screen sizes.
  • The plugins and widgets work on mobile as they should.
  • Proper Social media integration for mobile.

7) Link to your own posts as well as outside posts.

Interlinking to your own posts is great and can keep readers longer on your blog but don’t go overboard with linking your own stuff. Only link when some additional information can be provided through a link. Interlinking will also help you with seo as search engines will be able to easily crawl and index all your pages through the links.

Interlinks may also reduce the bounce rate of your blog which is important because it tells google whether people are finding your blog useful or not.

Many people are scared to link to other blogs because it creates an exit point for the reader. However in my opinion, linking to a another blog can add value to your content. No matter how good you website is, you can never provide everything to people, nor give all the relevant information pertaining to a topic. Leverage the power of the web and provide a scalable path to create a better experience for people visiting your blog.

Tip: Don’t link to shaddy websites, only link to reputable and authoritative websites.

If you follow this SEO tips, i assure you that you’ll create better content, drive more organic traffic and overall create a better user experience.
